Diffuser FAQ

Low-Divergence Diffuser FAQ’s

1. Can a diffuser be coated?

Yes, please specify the desired coating specs when requesting a quote.

2. Are there any materials besides fused silica?

As for substrate materials, currently not. Our process has been developed around fused silica, and it is preferred by most customers for its high quality and UV resistance. The final diffusers contain no other material (ie. epoxy) than fused silica, making them an excellent choice for high fluences or laser applications.

3. What shapes can be made?

Generally disks or rectangles, with a max thickness of about 5 mm. Diameters can be quite large, possibly as large as 250 mm. Most are less than 75 mm diameter, however, and sometimes as small as 5 mm. Disks may have a center hole machined to allow the disk to spin. Other shapes may be possible by special request.

4. What are the divergence limits and tolerances?

The range of divergences available are approximately 24 deg FWHM to 8 deg FWHM
Tolerances for a specified divergence are approximately +/- 1 deg FWHM

5. What finishing tolerances can be achieved?

Finishing tolerances are per typical optical finishing capability. The diffusing surface does not much affect the finishing tolerances.
